Mat Maoulding Pat Armstrong

Sussex had a good turn out for the last match of the season, with a strong side. We shared the first few frames with Hampshire and stayed they with us until 10/7 where we found another gear pulling away to a 25/19 victory. Everyone played their part on sunday by cheering each other on, but a special mention to Martin Vincent with 4/3 and joint man of the match going to Mat "i'll bite your head off" Moulding 4/4 and Pat" i played that" Armstrong 4/4. see pic's Our thanks to Hampshire for making the day enjoyable on and off the table. It's been an experience being the B-Team Captain and what a way to end the season. Cheers lads!

Mens C (Won 29 v 15)

Well what an end to the season, to win our last game put the icing on the cake! Everybody pl ayed great..

Team spirit was high & our voice was loud. A good day of pool. We started with 2 players short & then we had to lift 1 player to the B team. The juniors were up for a C team game so they filled in for us.

We started well & took a very early lead going 9-1 up, and from there we never looked back, as we were approaching frame 20 we lost a few, but the team got their game in gear, and when we crossed the winning line we shouted with pure joy.

Gary Knapper won man of the match with a solid 4 out 4, also from the juniors Jon Edminton got 4 out of 4. Rest of the team picked up 2 or 3 frames apiece.

Well it has been an interesting season, and I would like to say thanks to all the players who played their part this season, don't forget county trials on Jan 10th 11 am start hope to see all of you there!!!

Ladies (Won 26 v 18)

Well a perfect end to the season to end with. A win was just what we needed; team spirit was high though we were all mindful that it was Lotti’s last match for Sussex county it will be very strange without her but we wish her well and hope she continues to play pool at county level. Anyway back to the match in hand, it was a slow start with us neck and neck in the first set then we slowly but surely took the lead and by the beginning of the last quarter we had taken the match much to the surprise of Hampshire I feel. It was a great day for all the ladies: Hollie getting her first 3/4, Jo Kent 4/4, and I unfortunately can’t remember the rest, but I know as team we had a great result. However I know Lotti was disappointed with just 1/4 though she did get player of the match just because we could!!!!

I would like to thank all the Sussex ladies for their commitment this season and look forward to seeing you all at the trials on 10th January 2010 at Riley’s Brighton.

Mens B (Lost 31 v 13)
Man of the Match Oct 09 Sussex away to Berkshire

Last away match of the season and as usual last minute drop outs, which left us with 8 original B-Team players, but if that was not bad enough we lost a further two to the A-Team leaving us with 6 core B-Team players.

After a lot of helpful co-operation from Mark Hewitt The C-Team captain who was already short of players, we managed to take 4 of his top players and one new player (Jake Lucas)

We had a fair start to the match up until 5/4, then we hit a loosing streak of 10 frames in a row which we never recovered from.
Final score 31/13 to Berkshire.

A big thank you to all the players who made the pilgrimage up to Reading (see pic) which was only made possible by Mat Moulding and his lovingly name 9 seater Berty the Wagon. (bless)

Man of the match for Oct 09 with a very conniving 3 out of 4 frames was Martin Vincent, well played!! (see pic)

Mens C (Lost 41 v 3)

Where do I start?

Always best at the beginning this match would not of started without the ladies or with out the help of Berkshire c team.Thank you for all your help.

What do I say we were short of players & we lost. Paul Stanley won 2 out of 4 he gets man of the match Captain Mark Hewitt won the other frame that was it .

On a good note team spirit was great Sussex having a loud voice, man of the match Martin Vincent, got 3 out of 4, & with 5 other players getting 2 out of 4.

Final score 41-3
Ladies (Lost 27 v 17)

Well we were away to Berkshire with only 6 players on arrival so not a great start, so we enrolled three new players who were up for a day of pool and they all played really well, we had a fantastic day, all of the regular ladies not only played for ladies but doubled up for the C team as well not that they won any frames for them but at least they made up the numbers as I said we had a great day with a brilliant atmosphere, we are looking forward to Yarmouth and are hoping for a good result. Thank you ladies for playing the best you could on the day. Final score Lost 17 - 27.

Mens B (Lost 13 v 31)

Ekrem VatanseverOn behalf of all the Sussex B-Team, we would like to send our deepest condolence's to the Ashman family, Pete Ashman will be sadly missed and the world of pool has lost a very talented player.

It is very clear that we as a B-Team are still finding our feet. I have to say all of the players have the ability to win 4/4 but we were let down by our finishing, there was a few mist black balls. As a Captain I failed to inspire the B's with my below average play losing all 4 frames, it will not happen again! I have been asked to make a point about players moving up through the ranks before their time. Sussex has had a settling in period due to the lack of A team players, which I had hope was over. I would ask all B-Team players to be patient, as this will not be happening next year because all teams will work on a ranking base's.

Man of the match for Aug. was Ekrem Vatansever

B Team Captain

Mens C (Lost 17 v 27)

I felt that this was the strongest team that we have had this season, & I was looking for a good result.

Yet again we started strong, going 4-0 up then we let London pull a few frames back. But this time we managed to keep up with London, the score 5-5 then 8-8.Then we got to 15-15,just when we needed to keep the pace up we started to lose a few frames,& before we new it we were we had lost the match. Just a bit gutted!!

On a good note team spirit was great Sussex having a loud voice, man of the match Martin Vincent, got 3 out of 4, & with 5 other players getting 2 out of 4.

Final score 17-27
Ladies (Lost 12 v 32)

Sussex ladies struggled to put out their strongest team with so many players away, however a full team was fielded and all the ladies played well though the black ball seemed to just get away, and the frames kept going against them, and they were fire fighting with each frame, no one played badly yet no one seemed to find their form either. Stevie-Jane managed to get her foot on the Sussex score board with a win so well done and thanks to Lisa for stepping in to play her frames between running the bar at Rileys her games were close with some fantastic potting going on! Its been a rough season so far but I still feel the Sussex ladies score line is not a true picture of what they are capable of so hopefully the last 2 games of the season will show the region what we can really do and end the season on a high.

Mens B (Lost 18 v 26)

As usual Sussex B team got off to a good start, by holding our own frame for frame until 7-7 then the Surrey B's won 7 unanswered frames in a row.

Final score 18-26 to Surrey, not a bad score against an inform Surrey B team.

We seemed to do all the hard work in all of the remaining frames but just could not finish them off.

We need a minimum of two reserves for every match, B's we need to fight for our place in the B team.
This may tighten up the way we play.

Man of the match was Ekrem Vatansever with 3 out of 4. Well, played mate!

B Team Captain
Des Morley

Mens C (Lost 15 v 29)

Well what can I say; we started well again going into a 5-2 lead with us taking every chance we had. Then we started to lose a few, & then before we knew it we were 9-5 down. After that bad run we struggled to get back into it, we picked up the odd frame here & there but it was never enough to catch Surrey. We had 2 new players for us today Chris Kingham who picked up 3-out of 4, & Mark Proto who picked up 1 out of 4. On a good note Robin Harris got 3 out of 4. Paul Hicks was solid again & got 3 out of 4. Most of the other players picked up 1 out of 4, captain Mark Hewitt got dished twice on the trot, much to the enjoyment of the Surrey team. Man of the match goes to Paul Hicks.

Final score 15-29
Ladies (Lost 16 v 28)

It was good to be back on home ground and the ladies seemed to be up to the challenge of playing Surrey a full squad was put out with one reserve, all the players played really well with a lot of the frames being lost for no reason or so it seemed, after our last match of getting 18 frames we expected that we could achieve much the same if not better but it wasn’t to be we had a slow start and dropped a fair few frames in the middle managing to pick up the pace towards the end even though Sussex ladies only managed 16 frames they played really well. Holly Sleet is gaining ground each time she plays its great to see new players doing well ‘keep it up Holly!’ the player of the match goes to Becky Shaw who played some of her best pool this season it is great to have her back in Sussex where she belongs. Finally I would like to send the teams best wishes to Becky for her forthcoming wedding and we wish her all the best for the future!

Mens B (Won 20 v 24)

After recruiting three new players and persuading two former players to come back to county pool, we finally had a full B team until we lost three top players on the day to the A team. This resulted in trialling a new player 10 minutes before the game, good job as we ended up with a very strong B team!

Every B team player won 2 or more frames on the day, with two players excelling to win 3 out of 4 - making it a joint man of the match for Nigel Enticknapp and Scott Morlen. WELL DONE!

We battled frame for frame against a very competent Hampshire side right up until 18-18 where we nudged ahead to win 24-20.

As team captain I could not be any prouder of the way the whole team bonded and cheered each other on.

Mens C (Lost 25 v 19)

Jo Ken / Paul HicksA lot of changes for this game we had 4 new players, & 2 ladies & 2 juniors playing for us. With so many changes it was a hard game to call. Hampshire also had a lot of new players.

So I would say we were about even. Yet again we started well, then got pulled back, but throughout the whole match we would pop into the lead then back to even again.

We had Dan Harris (new player) won 2 out of 4 Robin Harris (new player) a bit unlucky lost 2 out of 2. Also John Baxter (new player) lost 2 out of 2 and Dean Christie (new player) who played well but lost 4 out of 4.

Who was man of the match? Paul Hicks who got 3 out of 4, we were all thinking what are you up to Paul on your 3rd game then he pulls of a great double on the black to win. Also Jo Kent & Justin Heath pulled out 3 out of 4. Sue Ashton got 1 out of 2 same as Mark Hewitt. For the juniors we had Chris Dolding solid as ever won 2 out of 2 & Robert Chiverton lost 2 out of 2.

I believe the C team is starting to move forward with each game, we will get there it's going to take a little bit of time but we will get there.
Final score lost 25-19.

Ladies (Lost 29 v 15)

The day started full of hope with the ladies gaining their first win last month and even better news London and Berkshire were playing the top 2 teams Kent and Surrey. However the day didn't go Sussex's way even from the start, we went 3 nil down and struggled throughout the day trying to get into double figures, it wasn't through the lack of trying as no one played that badly just the frames didn't go our way, only by the 3rd set had we made it to double figures and credit to Hampshire they played really well and ended up winning 29 to 15 to add to our bad day we found out London had beaten Surrey so now we have to try even harder to creep back up the table but don't despair we can do it we have a strong team this year we just need to hold our heads up and go for wins frame by frame. It was hard again to pick out any one outstanding player however Jane Morely gains the player of the match for playing some of her best pool and I feel she is standing up well to the pressures of county games so well done!

Juniors (Won 21 v 23)

Good news this month from the Sussex youth team. A Win, a close win but a win nevertheless!

With a full team and three new players Sussex arrived in Hampshire and ready for the first win of this season. The match was close run throughout and by the end of the first half Sussex were trailing by 2 frames, this increased to a 5 frame deficit very quickly. However, the Sussex spirit was in large volume and we won 7 straight frames to take the lead again, once we finally managed to keep the white ball on the table and not flying half way around the room!!! By the 43rd frame the score was Sussex 22 - 21 Hampshire, Peter Hazell went on to play a fantastic winning frame of pool for the Sussex Win.

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome Shaun Cottingham, Bradlee Humphrey and Shane Humphrey to the youth team. All played well on Sunday, with a congratulations to Shane receiving Player of the match, for winning 3 frames in his first county appearance. Chris Dolding, Zac Young and Peter Hazell also put in a brilliant performance and winning 4, 3 and 3 frames respectively. Congratulations to all of you it was a thoroughly enjoyable day with a good result and on the right track to take on Kent in a fortnight!

Well what can I say, we got hammered. We had a few players short for this game, but we made up the numbers with a few juniors,& did we need them!!. Chris Dolding & Robert Chiverton both picked up 2 frames a piece. Also from the juniors we had Scott Lee, who played only 2 matches,& was unlucky not to get on the score sheet. Justin Heath & Rudy both got 2 a piece.5 other players picked up 1 frame only. Who was man of the match, a hard 1 to call, no 1 played great, but I would have to say that both Chris & Robert, can share man of the match. The difference between us & Berkshire, they took there chances when they had them. When we play the return match I believe that we can beat them.

I believe that the team is suffering from a lack of confidence, we have the players in the team to get the results, but we need that 1 good win to get it started. Heads up team we can do it !!!!!
Final score 13-31

Ladies (Won 29 v 15)

May09At last some good no excellent news to report; the Sussex Ladies beat Berkshire! All ladies played very well, again a full squad and reserves to choose from, Stevi-Jane played her first frame for the ladies team though she didn't win she seemed to enjoy the game, as for the rest what can I say Laura Edmonds played outstandingly as did Jane Morley. Sussex steamed ahead from the start, a small relapse in the middle but did well to hold the lead. Sussex played from their new venue with the ladies moving to the tables nearest the bar area plenty of room and team spirit a very enjoyable day, I hope the ladies can now carry this through the rest of the season with some more wins, here to next month away to Hampshire! Player of the match Laura Edmonds well done!

Mens B (Lost 35 v 9)

We started off by taking the first 2 frames giving the London boys nothing to cheer about, unfortunately that all changed when London got their first of many frames.
London cheers came thick and fast, most of them coming from Jamie Fay, sadly this seem to shock Sussex B's into silence.
As a new B team we need to find our supporting voice!
All that can be said is the Sussex B's were not potted off the table; we just gave them too many chances.

Must try harder B's
Mens C (Lost 31 v 13)

A disappointing day, we lost 2 players to the B team, but I felt that we still had a strong team.
It started with Sussex going 2-0 down, then we started to fire & won 5 out of the next 6, then things went bad, we started to lose a few then it got worse. Sussex had there chances but did not take them, after this bad spell the team lost heart, and struggled to get back into it. London did some fine clearances and they did have some luck on the table, most of our players had a day to forget. On a good note player of the match Justin Heath (pictured) won 4 out of 4 well done!! .JD (pictured on wall) solid as ever won 2 out of 4, Josh Manderson picked up his 1st win but was robbed out of at least 2 more. Paul Stanley who had a rocky start to the season, got his game in gear and won 2 out of 4.We had Jane Morley from the ladies, who played 2 and played well but felt she was robbed by the table, also from the ladies we had Sue Ashton, who picked up 1 out of 2 well done Sue!!
Final score 31-13
Justin Heath  JD

Ladies (Lost 28 v 16)

Apr09Here we go again. I so wish I could report a blazing win for the ladies but yet again its bad news; Sussex ladies had a full strong team once more, but didn’t get it together at all, the venue was cramped and hot but this should not have stopped them going ahead against a team only 4 points above them in the table, especially after doing so well last month against Kent. However the ladies never took the lead and in the last set tried to keep London on 18 then 20 and finally hoped told them at a draw but it just wasn’t their day Sussex seemed to do all the hard work then let London finish it off to take the frames leaving Sussex with a disappointing 16 frames!

It was hard to choose a player that stood out but Lotti Batten seemed to play better than she had so far this season so hopefully she has found her form once more winning 3 from 4 on the day which makes her the captains' player of the match well done. There is nowhere else for the ladies to go than up the table so lets hope for better luck next month back home against Berkshire 'come on ladies you can do it!!!'
Juniors (Lost 35 v 9)

Leah HardingGreat match, unfair result.

The first match report for the Sussex County Junior team unfortunately doesn’t hold a winning story for us, however, it does tell the tale of a team that were very unlucky with the way the frames went and a team that not only supported each other all day but maintained the courtesy and respect that is expected of the county and all of it’s teams.
Sussex Juniors arrived in London with 10 players ready to take on one of the best youth team in the region. Unfortunately our willingness wasn’t reflected in the result. All of our 10 players, captained by Peter Hazell, played extremely well and with most matches being very close the scores just didn’t go our way. Congratulations to Peter Hazell and Dan Booker for winning two of their four frames each.

The team would like to thank both Chris Pooley and Leah Harding for stepping in at very short notice to ensure that we had the best team available, and congratulations Leah for winning Player of the Match for April (pictured). Previous winners for this season are Rhys Williams for last month and Zac Young February.

Surrey v Sussex 22/03/2009 (posted 07/04/09)
Mens A (Lost 28 v 16)

A disappointing day again, against the National Champions we got off to good start going 3-1 up and should have more, but for missed chances, after that Surrey took control and went 16-4 up at one point, but we battled back in the end to make the score reasonable.
On the plus side there were good performances from Darren Welfare again got 3 /4 as did Dan Stirling, and other solid displays coming from Dom Ashman, James Sheed and Ken Ford who all won 2/4.
Man of the match was Darren Welfare who so this season has 6/8 well done Darren.
From my point of view not been able to put the strongest A team out I would like at the moment, but with several A team players coming back for the London match, I feel it will improve.

Mens B (Lost 31 v 13)

Mens C (Lost 30 v 14)

A few changes to the team for this match, 3 players went up to the B team. We were glad to welcome Stevie from the ladies who was unlucky not to get on the score sheet. We also had Chris from the juniors who picked up 2 wins.
We started great going 5-0 up then we started to let few frames slip. New player Josh played well but luck was not on his side. John Davidson who played great today won 3 out of 4. A few players picked up a 0 today but full credit to Surrey they played well & won 2 frames from the break, venue was good & food was very good bring on London next game final score was 14-30.

Ladies (Lost 26 v 18)

Mar09 The Sussex ladies travelled to Croydon for their away match against Surrey with a full squad and 2 reserves, including some new players knowing that it would be a tough day. Hollie "potter" Sleet made her first appearance for Sussex and was able to hold her own but unfortunately only managed 1 from 4, Natalie Andrews played extremely well winning 3 from 4, and Sue Ashton was clearly the player of the match winning all 4 frames! Not forgetting Carley Johnson who not only had the task of organising the youth team in her new post of Youth Team Manager but also played 2 frames for the ladies winning one of them! Absolutely brilliant for her first game for county, her sister Stevie-Jane played 4 frames for the C team.  It was a hard start with Surrey getting 5 or more frames and Sussex still not off the starting blocks, this continued until the third set when the Sussex ladies started fighting back they managed to hold Surrey at 20 frames for a while but only managing to win 18 frames to Surrey’s 26 by the end, which was still a fantastic result considering who we were up against! Bring on London, Sussex are ready! FINAL SCORE 26-18

Sussex v Kent 01/02/2009 (posted 02/02/09)
Mens A (Lost 18 v 26)

A disappointing day in the end I felt, considering it was the strongest A team we have had for a while. Started off slowly going 4-1 down and never really seemed to get out of first gear, from there on, to be fair to Kent who had lost a lot of players, they played very solidly and had a bit of run at times. We battled back to 12-10 but that was the closest we got all day.
Ever though the result was not what I was looking for, our new venue is very good and tables were good all day and atmosphere was great.
On the plus side there were good performances from Darren Welfare, Will Ashman and Man of Match John Gillard who won 3 and who was solidly supported by Dom Ashman, Clive Rayon and Ken Ford who all got 2.
So first game over, we have a very tough game against Region 7 Champions Surrey next, but at least we can improve so you never know.

Mens B (Lost 21 v 23)

The 2009 B-team season started with a complete squad shake up, which was bound to have an impact either way. Everyone was hoping for the better. An almost all new team led by a new team Captain in Naftali Ayieko stepped up, all looking to make their mark in the Region. And with a quality reserve list of players to choose from too, there was going to be fireworks, even within the team. We just needed to direct this energy at the opponents.
Kent being one of the top region and national sides was never going to be a push over. But the up for it Sussex side started out well and kept toe to toe all the way. It was soon clear this was going to be a close one.
Rob Wadey and Dean Brookmarsh showed some early form with a few notable clearances. Both coped well under pressure. New gun Jamie Simmons got his County pool career off with a steady and well taken 2 wins. But this is one player who will never forget to nominate (very loudly) after potting off the break next time! Lets just say his soft voice did cost him a frame.
Meanwhile, little but loud Spencer Flowers had the Houdini escape of the day in his second frame, when he looked like he would shortly be dead and buried, but somehow managed to get a snooker on the only possible spot on the table after some hard safety graft. How he won his 1 frame had to be seen to be believed. But the rest of his games somehow got away from him, and he is almost certain to be having a not so quiet chat with himself after this.
Gary Knapper who joins the B's from the 2008 C-team had a misfired start. Other players to suffer this fate were Alex Stones and Ben Jones. These are all experienced region cueists with track records who were there on merit, and they'll be back to prove it too. All lost their first 2 frames. Alex is a retained player from 2008 while Ben although new to the team, has even contested national pool titles in the past.
Des Morley returned to the County fold notching 3 out of 4 wins after putting behind his health problems from 2008 which had physically hindered his play before. Also back from last season was "Stevie" Bird, who calmly came off the bench in the second half to show the rest of us how to play under pressure pool and win both his 2 frames, and in top style to boot. Steady as you like Paul Alexander showed us why he is also a renowned local talent, but he also let a few frames slip by him.
New to the team, the Tanner brothers Jason and Simon both settled well and each managed 1 and 2 wins respectively. Although Jason's were from 2 frames. The rub of the green didn't really favour Simon on the day, but they'll be one's to watch in future no doubt.
Team captain Naftali came off the bench to win 1 out of his two frames on the day. But the crucial second lost frame would have earned Sussex a draw. Yes, the opponent fluked the black ball in a tense ending, but someone will be reciting their Hail Marys' for letting the game slip away when the chances were clearly there early on in the frame.
But the best for last. The clear Man of the match, Darren Jeffery, played like his hair was on fire to win 4 out of 4. "Gramps" was confidently Goose stepping around the table like he owned Rileys. There was never any doubt who was in charge in his games, be it safety play or potting. It was all positive and decisive play we could all learn from. Well done Darren.
All in all, the B-team made a positive account of ourselves despite the narrow loss to Kent and with a new side. Most of who have never played County level pool before. But the real testers come next though. We take on Surrey and then London, both away matches which may shape the rest of the Sussex season. On we go.
COME ON SUSSEX!

Mens C (Lost 17 v 27)

A new season for the C Team & it started with Kent at home. The team started with 7 new players and they picked up 12 points of the 17 that we won. Mark Dahr scored 3 out 4, most of the new players scored 2 out of 4. Ekrem Vatansever did a great clearance from the break in his last frame. An unlucky start for Stuart Stone who played well but could not get on the score sheet .Everybody was happy with the new venue and the tables were playing great!! The whole team are looking forward to playing Surrey in the next match. The final score was 17-27 to Kent.

Ladies (Lost 11 v 33)

Sussex Ladies hosted their first match at their new home Rileys Brighton they took on the might of which is 'Kent' the ladies had a full squad plus 5 reserves, the team was mostly made up of retained players from last year with the captain giving opportunities to Jane Morley and Natalie Andrews to earn their place in the team by playing 1 and 2 frames consecutively, unfortunately Jane lost her one frame and Natalie proved she hasn’t lost her touch by winning one of her two frames, the rest of the team did their best and put up a good fight not allowing Kent to have it too easily, in the early stages Sussex looked to be holding their own with the score at 5 all and 6-5 to the home team 'very briefly' but the Sussex ladies just couldn’t keep it up and Kent stormed ahead. Although the score was low the team spirit was high with most of the ladies liking the new venue and now looking forward to taking on the rest of the region at home when the time comes. Look out Surrey we mean business this season with the strongest team in place since Jo Chappel took over as captain!
GOOD LUCK NEXT MONTH LADIES !
