Sussex hosted the regional finals with 12 under 15s and 17 under 18s competing for their right to the national finals in Great Yarmouth 8th/9th November 2008
Following the Group stages Surrey provided 3 of the four under 18s in the play-offs with London’s Joe Prince looking to spoil their day. It wasn’t to be for Joe who played through his pain after being stung by a wasp on his big toe at least that was his excuse. Joking Joe !!! Steven Petty beat Liam Pearson 4-1 and George Reeves beat Joe prince 4-0. Not a bad day for Steve who completed the day unbeaten.
The under 15s play offs included more of a spread after the group stages with three Surrey players , two London , two Sussex and one Kent player. London provided the performance of the day with 10year old Jasper Bacon loosing to Peter Hazel from Sussex 4-3. A very relieved Peter who was leading the region singles said it was the hardest match of his life ! Surreys James Charlwood also booked his place beating Kent’s Jack Galloway 4-3 coming back from being 3-2 down. London’s Frank Costello had an easier win 4-0 against Zak Young from Sussex 4-0 leaving the two Surrey team mates Mike Hope and Ashley Acton battling for the last place Mike winning 4-0.
Under 18 qualifiers Steven Petty and George Reeves, both Surrey
Under 15 qualifiers Peter Hazel, Sussex, Mike Hope, Surrey, Frank Costello, London and James Charlwood, Surrey
Drew 22-22
Sussex ladies played Berkshire at their home venue in Chichester the ladies put out a full team and a reserve which included our youngest registered player Leah Harding and a new member Mandy Brown both of whom played very well although did not manage a win this time. It was a tight match from the start with Berkshire sneaking ahead at times only for Sussex ladies to edge back each time, the game was all decided during the last quarter Sussex needing to win 4 frames to win overall however it wasn’t to be and the draw was decided with Sheila Durham, the end result 22 all ! Thanks to Sheila dealing with the pressure of the game well, which resulted in her winning player of the match (Sheila pictured below).

Lost 29-15
Sussex ladies were away to Surrey at the new venue which proved to be a vast improvement on their previous home; however this did not help the Sussex ladies win through on the day with them only winning 15 frames, Jo Kent still maintains her 100% record with Lu Lu Harding winning 3 from 4 which earns her player of the match for May, the remainder of the team only managed 1 frame each apart from Lotti who won 2, a disappointing result for the ladies who need to up their game once more to stay off the bottom of the table ahead of London and Berkshire.
Below is a picture of players of the match February - Rose Hawkins, March – Lotti Batten and April – Jo Kent, not forgetting Lu Lu Harding for May.

A disappointing result with the ladies only managing 18 frames against Hampshire, after being given 8 frames from a depleted Hampshire side Sussex ladies could not hold on to a lead, Jo Kent however maintains her 100% record having played 10 frames this season and has not lost a single one so congratulations must go to her 'well done'. The ladies will have to come back stronger next month against Surrey if they want to stay off the bottom of the table.
Jo Chappel - captain
Sussex ladies played London ladies on 9th March at Peckham Rye, another great match with the ladies putting forward a full team plus reserves. It was a very close match from the start with only one frame between the teams until the 22nd frame when London went ahead by 4 frames, Sussex ladies soon pulled it back to a one frame difference taking it right down to the last frame where Lotti Batten won the final frame giving the ladies their first win for the season. Lotti, Lu Lu Harding and Sue Woods all came away with 3 from 4 followed by most of the team gaining 2 frames each. It was a fantastic day with a great atmosphere resulting in a well deserved win for Sussex. Player of the match for last month was announced as Rose Hawkins for her outstanding frames against Kent. Player of the match for this month goes to Lotti for holding her nerve during a crucial winning frame. Well done to all.
Jo Chappel - captain
The first county match of the season saw a very positive day for the county against a normally very strong Kent . The new squad selection format worked with all teams putting forward their early selections meaning no last minute on the day changes which have been so negative in the past.
Mens A won 24-20
A really solid win with vice captain Ken Ford taking 4 frames taking the last 5 frames in a row not forgetting William Ashmans superb dish to make the match 23-20 Good performances from Ash , Dom , William and Dan Stirling with 3 frames each.
Ladies lost 14-30
Definitely an improvement against possibly the best ladies team in the country brimming full of England players. Jo Chappel led her girls with outstanding performances from Jo Kent (4 wins) supported by Lotti, Sheila and Rose Hawkins with two frames each. An excellent day with all players playing at their best, the ladies have started the season well with a full team plus reserves no one player received player of the match as all the team played above and beyond expectations, excellent team spirit and support throughout the day, where all the frames were well deserved. Well done to all the team, Kent will think twice before they drop their guard at the return match. Here's to the start of an improved side and season in 2008.
Mens B won 27-17
Rob Barnes team stormed to their record win with seven players all taking 3 frames apiece. A massive team effort with all players sharing man of the match Kent gave in after loosing 10 frames in the second quarter . The match only had one winner.
Mens C lost 14-30
Juniors won 24-20
New captain Jack Cairns and Vice Steve McCullough back from their England trials led by example taking 3 and 4 frames apiece with Peter Hazel player of the match with his first 4 frames win. Sussex had led throughout the match by a couple of frames and at 21-13 looked set for a big result. Kent then found second momentum winning 6 frames leaving the Alex Morley to drag the team back to winning ways with his second only ever win and one that resulted in him being mobbed by his team mates. Kents bubble burst then and conceded the last two frames.
Sussex welcomed players from Berkshire , Surrey and Hampshire making up the 45 players for the day.
Last minute discussions took place on the day between county officials to decide the final prize fund which had been reduced due to a clash with Region 7 club tour where several players were committed to the tour.
The agreed outcome was for the county to subsidise the fund by £ 100.00 making it a £ 550.00 payout.
Matches commenced at 11.30 and pre match favourite Moray Dolan made the quarter finals beating ex Sussex A team captain Damian Campsey whilst Greg Lewes , Steve Petty and Dominic Ashman had made their presence known with wins over Bobby Terry , Kelly Dahr and Clive Rayson.
Steve Petty picked up momentum in the semi finals beating Dominic Ashman 5 - 2 whilst Greg Lewes and Morray Dolan went the full 9 frames with Greg winning 5 - 4.
Taking confidence from knocking out Morray , Greg started the final by taking the first two frames but had to watch as Steve then took the next five frames in a row to take the match and the title 5 - 4.
Winner - Steve Petty
Runner Up - Greg Lewes

Congratulations to all named. For those not in the squads they believe they should be the squads will be reassessed after three matches so there will be opportunities for promotion during the season according to player performance.
Please make sure that all players are registered to play by signing up for the EPA card.
For those players that did not make the squads I will be happy to take notes of these for a mid season mini trial to be arranged.
Good Luck
